Taking Charge is about investing in yourself so that you can manage yourself effectively regardless of what life might bring your way. You need to develop yourself personally and this involves taking responsibility of yourself and taking charge.
Personal development allows you to be proactive. Rather than wait for good things to happen, you get out there and make them happen.(coachingpositiveperformance.com) That’s you taking charge and becoming better.
Personal development is a lifelong process. It’s a way for people to assess their skills and qualities, consider their aims in life and set goals in order to realise and maximise their potential.(skillsyouneed.com)
Personal development covers activities that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital and facilitate employability, enhance quality of life and contribute to the realisation of dreams and aspirations. Not limited to self-help, the concept involves formal and informal activities for developing others in roles such as teacher, guide, counsellor, manager, life coach or mentor. When personal development takes place in the context of institutions, it refers to the methods, programs, tools, techniques, and assessment systems that support human development at the individual level in organisations. We all have dreams and a picture of what we perceive as success. Some of us want to live our dreams so badly that we get depressed or unhappy at our growth and are constantly dissatisfied.
Regardless of who we are and what our dreams look like, the most vital thing to do while we aspire to achieve them is to start living the life we want.
How is this conceivable?
•Change how you think. No dream is unattainable and it would do you a lot of good if you start believing that you can achieve your goals. You can achieve anything if you change how you think, no matter how scared you are of those goals.
•Write down your goals. It is very easy to stay focused and work towards goals when they are written down. A lot of people own a goal book or a dream board these days, with photos, writeups, pinups etc telling of the direction that their life ought to take. A dream board usually covers a job with attractive earnings, a home, exotic car, luxury vacations, good health, education at an Ivy League school, educational goals such as getting a PHD, ideal body type, supporting a worthy cause, good life for your family and children, helping others etc. Personally, having a goal book has helped me maintain a steady weight and drop a dress size. I was not particularly overweight but making a decision and seeing it outlined in a journal every morning helped me work towards my ideal body type.
•Form good habits. If you aspire to publish a book but keep putting aside finishing it, then you need to create time. This is possible if you cut down on some things you do that are not entirely necessary for your growth. I suggest cutting down on TV hours at night so you can write a few paragraphs.
•Research. There is information on the internet that are tailored to help you become better. Most of the time, these are free. Otherwise, enrol on a learning programme, read books, watch YouTube videos, download articles and do some research on people who have already done what you intend to do. You can also study their life and learn from them or get a mentor to help you.
•Appreciate your journey. It is very easy to get carried away when you focus on other people’s achievements. Life is meant to be lived so focus on being happy at whatever growth stage you find yourself. Eliminate stress or people who constantly seek to put you down. There are no templates or rules so do only what is best for you. Don’t wait till your son goes to college before you join that yoga class. Do it now. You’d soon realise that there’s no perfect time to do anything until you start doing it.
Maybe you’re thinking “I’d save up and register at the gym”. While you wait, download workout apps- you do not need fancy
equipment in order to workout anyway! Do what you need to do now and make the best of every moment.
Make a decision to live the life you’ve always dreamed and choose to start now. Be sure to give your goals some time and while you’re doing this, be happy. Success takes time and whenever you’re uncertain, remember that you aren’t doing anything wrong by living- this is what life is simply meant for.
